Overview

The UNESCO Chair in World Food Systems was founded in 2011 by Professor Jean-Louis Rastoin (Montpellier SupAgro) with a multidisciplinary group of teachers and researchers from various institutions of the Agropolis campus (Montpellier, France). It was accredited by UNESCO for a first 4-year cycle, and again in 2015 and 2019.

Bridging the gap between food science disciplines and supporting different stakeholders to deliver more sustainable food systems

The Chair serves as an opening forum for exchange and experimentation to promote sustainable food systems, based on the conviction that food is much more than an economic sector. It also encompasses significant challenges related to the environment, health, social solidarity, the formation of identities and cultures, artistic practices, and more.

Each of these functions corresponds to scientific disciplines that the Chair aims to integrate in order to develop a holistic approach to food, not as a meta-discipline encompassing all perspectives and issues, but as a means of stepping back from overly specialized approaches and reconciling science and society.
